Cape Town’s south peninsula boasts a few excellent golf courses that are highly sought out amongst visitors to the city.
Westlake
The 18-hold, par 72 course affords panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Not for the fainted-hearted when the Cape Doctor is blowing, Westlake’s doglegs and towering trees give the course its notoriety for being tough. The maintained terrain is well wooded which does provide a reprieve from the Southeaster winds.
Clovelly
An exquisite golf course nestled in Silvermine Valley, Clovelly Country Club is one of the finest in South Africa. The course follows neither the links nor the American tradition in its design but has a good mix of testing holes with the Silvermine River and neighbouring ponds adding much to the course’s character.
Steenberg
Steenberg Golf Estate is situated in the lush Constantia Valley and attracts golfers seeking a total golfing experience. Known for its hybrid plan, it offers traditionalists the opportunity to ‘bump and run’ (a rare shot in South Africa) in the rough around the greens, and to meet the challenges of strategically placed sand pits and waterways.
King David Mowbray Golf Club
Unquestionably one of South Africa’s finest courses and regular host to the PGA tour, King David Mowbray is without doubt a demanding and challenging day out. The par 4, 15th hole is of particular note with a long narrow undulating fairway and a green overlooked by Table Mountain. Much of the charm of King David Mowbray Golf Club lies in the spectacular views of the Cape Peninsula Mountains.
Royal Cape
With a proud history that spans 130 years, Royal Cape boasts impressive views of Table Mountain and is the current host of the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open. The golf club has also hosted the South African open on 10 occasions with past winners including Gary Player and Ernie Els.
