Abe Opperman has a distinctive art style, lively and whimsical in its energy and beauty, and he has galleries in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. His childhood consisted of the large open spaces typical of farm life, filled with dramatic vistas of mountains and orchids grown by his own hand.
The gallery can be found in the quaint district of De Waterkant, close to iconic settings such as the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town Stadium and the magisterial grandeur of Table Mountain. Its interior is crisp, modern and bright, mirroring its celebrated sister gallery in Johannesburg, which doubles up as the artist’s flower and interior shop going by the name of Hoy P’Loy.
Exhibitions change every 6 months, with Opperman’s works exclusively adorning the walls. His craft is unmistakably his own, with intimate pieces containing bold subjects that can almost be seen as shadows stretching across starker backgrounds.
